Christmas Gifts

The 'season' of Christmas seems to get longer as commercialism strives to get our attention earlier and earlier each year. Now, October hasn't closed before we are seeing signs of Christmas in the shops. It's not long before coloured lights and illuminated ornaments decorate our high streets and remind us that Christmas is drawing ever nearer. Shop windows painted with artificial snow and stores playing Christmas Carols try to get us into the spirit of Christmas and tempt us to part with hard earned cash.

christmas treeEarly in December we will see homes decorated with Christmas trees and lights, not only indoors, but more and more people are now decorating their homes on the outside for all to see. Some people make such wonderful displays of their homes that others will travel to see them and this is often an opportunity for donations to be collected on behalf of worthwhile charities.

The sending of Christmas Cards is another of our more recent traditions, started in Britain when the first public postal service began.

But Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without Father Christmas (Santa Claus). With his long white beard and bright red clothes he is an unmistakable character who travels the globe in a sleigh pulled by Rheindeer. He is based on St. Nicholas, a 4th century Christian leader. Legend has it that St.Nicholas, who gave to the poor anonymously because of his shyness, climbed onto a roof and dropped a purse of money down the chimney. It landed in a sock drying by the fire.

wrapped giftThe tradition of giving presents to friends and family dates back to the time of the Ancient Romans and now has become an expected and essential part of Christmas celebrations. What to give each of our friends as a suitable gift occupies a great part of our time during the weeks running up to Christmas. More and more people are now turning to the internet to ease the burden of selection, but how do they know they are dealing with reputable businesses? They don't, and the 'net is full of stories of people who have been let down. There's not a lot many of us can do about that, especially when it comes to trying to help others. In my own, very small way, I want to try and do something and for that reason I want to identify some businesses I know you can trust.
