The Poetry of Jill Henderson-Long

IF (2007)

If you join hands with your neighbour
and they join hands with theirs,
if everybody in the world
unites in common prayer,
if we can find a moment
in each and every day
to think about somebody else,
chase selfishness away,
if we can keep composure,
and remember to stay calm,
then whispered phrases
packed with love,
would be our healing balm.
If we can find a common cause
to live for and not fight,
like peace across a troubled earth
each day and every night,
if we can stand together
as one united front
and focus on our lovely world
instead of on the hunt,
if we could only, in our hearts
remember only this,
together we stand, united we fall,
in one communal wish.
If we can pause a moment
and simply push aside
individual prejudice
and concentrate on pride,
this world may weep
but soon she’ll see
as one, we can stand tall,
believing in a perfect peace
that gently soothes us all.

There is nothing wrong
with having faith in yourself.
Believe the belief.
